Our commitment to safety and scientific rigor sets our Free & Clear formula apart. We are proud to be the first laundry detergent to earn the Asthma & Allergy Friendly® Certification – a program developed by Allergy Standards Ltd. (ASL) in partnership with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). This certification involves comprehensive testing to ensure the detergent supports a healthier indoor environment, particularly for those with asthma or allergies. Testing includes:

1.    ALLERGEN AND DUST REMOVAL

Laundry detergents are assessed for their ability to remove allergens from fabrics. This involves testing fabrics seeded with allergen-containing dust, including dust mite allergen, and comparing them to unwashed controls to ensure significant allergen reduction post-washing. The certified detergent must demonstrate a reduction in allergens of more than 95% to meet program standards.

2.    CHEMICAL AND INGREDIENT REVIEW

The detergent undergoes a detailed chemical assessment to verify it contains no sensitizing or allergenic ingredients. Fragrances, dyes, and optical brighteners
are excluded. Residual chemical levels on washed fabrics must be either non-detectable or at levels low enough not to pose concern.

3.    VOC EMISSIONS TESTING

The detergent is tested in an environmentally controlled chamber, where all VOCs released over a 14-day period are measured. VOC levels are specifically recorded at 24 hours, 48 hours, and 336 hours (14 days) to ensure that emissions remain low throughout the full testing period. Certification requires VOC levels to remain consistently below strict program thresholds to help protect indoor air quality.

The result? A detergent that’s not only tough on allergens, but also gentle on indoor environments—offering peace of mind for families managing asthma and allergies.
